Frequently Asked Questions about Therapy
The key is to set a goal and then keep working towards it...

How does therapy/counseling "work"?
It assists a person in developing better insight which leads to an improvement in their overall coping abilities. Insight is developed by allowing the therapist show the client different perspectives on whatever issues are brought to the session.
How long will I be in therapy?
Length of therapy is individualized based on the client's response to interventions. Short-term therapy is deemed optimal but it varies from client to client. Maintenance visits are always appropriate.
How do I know you are the right therapist for me?
The therapist and client must make a "fit". This is a mutually agreed-upon notion between both therapist and the client. Usually within the first or second session, the client feels some degree of comfort with whomever they are calling their "therapist". I encourage potential clients to interview a selection of therapists at least by phone to help determine whether or not there is a "fit".
What is your training?
I completed formal training in psychology and earned a PhD. In addition, I have 35 years of experience including state and county hospitals, school systems (public and private), group practices in private practice. Each experience has provided me with insights into my profession, allowing me to deepen my understanding of human emotions.
As with most other occupations, "on-the-job training" is most effective and provides the best platform processing those who seek counseling services.
Do you do therapy via email? Via phone?
The preferred mode of any therapeutic relationship is generally face-to-face, and I make myself available 24 hours a day when necessary. Phone calls and emails are accepted where appropriate to therapy.
What are your fees?
My fee structure is outlined on the Fees and Payment tab on the website.
How long is each therapy session?
The length of the session depends on the issues that are brought in. Generally, initial sessions will run up to 90 minutes. Subsequent sessions are generally 60 minutes. Additional time is always provided when necessary.
How can I get the most out of sessions with you?
Whether you see a therapist or your primary care physician, a person should write down questions and issues as they come up between sessions. This helps to ensure that you as the client "drive" the session and it sets the tone and the goals of our time together.
How do I know that I'm making progress?
The general barometer of improvement is based more upon your feelings than on interpretations from others. Essentially, as you begin to feel better you will notice changes within your own life. As improvement is seen by you internally you'll see improvements in many other aspects of life. Feeling better on the inside will allow you to recognize your growth.
